Mr Lalit Kumar is a Consultant General and Robotic Colorectal Surgeon at Russells Hall Hospital specialising in colorectal cancer, minimally invasive colorectal surgery and colonoscopy. He has completed advanced robotic fellowships in France and the UK and has extensive experience in robotic and laparoscopic surgery. Mr Kumar also treats a wide range of general surgical conditions including hernias, gallbladder disease and skin lesions using modern minimally invasive techniques.
Mr Kumar graduated in 2002 from North Maharashtra University in India and completed his basic surgical training in the United Kingdom, followed by specialist training in General & Colorectal Surgery within the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery. He subsequently pursued advanced subspecialty fellowships in robotic colorectal surgery at CHU Bordeaux, France with Professor Eric Rullier, one of the highest volume colorectal cancer centres in Europe, and at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth with Professor Jim Khan, a leading centre for robotic surgery in the UK.
These fellowships provided extensive experience in robotic colorectal surgery and the management of complex surgical conditions, allowing him to develop advanced skills in modern minimally invasive surgical techniques.
In addition to colorectal surgery, he has a strong interest in minimally invasive general surgery. He regularly performs procedures such as laparoscopic and robotic hernia repair, gallbladder surgery (cholecystectomy), and the removal of skin lesions and other common “lumps and bumps”. He is an experienced robotic surgeon with extensive experience performing robotic procedures as part of his colorectal and general surgical practice.
He holds a Doctorate (MD Res) from University College London, where his research focused on the assessment of anal canal function and pelvic floor disorders. During his academic training he developed a strong interest in research and has authored around fifteen peer-reviewed publications, including original research, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and has presented his work at numerous international surgical conferences.
Mr Kumar is the Colorectal Lead at Russells Hall Hospital, where he plays a key role in the development and delivery of colorectal surgical services. He also serves as the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Lead, contributing to the optimisation of peri-operative care and recovery pathways for patients undergoing surgery. In these leadership roles he has led several quality improvement initiatives focused on improving patient outcomes, refining surgical pathways and maintaining high standards of clinical care. Alongside his clinical work, he is actively involved in teaching, leadership and service development, holds a postgraduate diploma in Leadership, and contributes to the training of medical students and junior doctors as well as Royal College of Surgeons training courses.
